GLOBAL CHANGES OF GEOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT:
A REAL THREAT TO STABLE DEVELOPMENT OF CIVILIZATION
(A report by International Committee on issues of Global Changes of the Geological Environment, “GEOCHANGE,”, May 2010)
Summary
There have been shown some results of studies of global changes in the geological environment, expressed by the statistics and scale of various natural disasters of both atmospheric and geological nature. On the basis of the statistical analysis of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami, drift of the magnetic poles and other geological processes it has been demonstrated that Earth’s geodynamic activity has been continuously increasing for the last 100 years, with this tendency substantially growing during the last two decades. This is reflected in the number of casualties and extent of economic damage caused by natural disasters.
A similar trend can be observed in atmospheric processes, namely by the increase in the number of tornados, hurricanes, tropical storms, floods, etc. Global changes in the environment as a result of anthropogenic and natural factors, being summarized, strengthen the resulting negative effect.
Meanwhile, we have to acknowledge that humankind is not prepared to enter the phase of global natural cataclysms, either psychologically, economically, technologically or legally. We ought to bring together the efforts by scientists and politicians of all countries to establish a mechanism and international laws in order to effectively manage forecasts and solutions the global problems associated with natural disasters.
